Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, Australia

Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (PMH) is a place of inspiration, hope & love. The PMH Foundation is the only dedicated fundraising body for Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (PMH), Western Australia’s only specialist children's hospital.

WHAT DOES THE PMH FOUNDATION DO?:
Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (PMH) is a place of inspiration, hope and love. As an internationally recognised paediatric facility, the hospital cares for over 250,000 children each year from all over Western Australia, as inpatients and outpatients.

The PMH Foundation is the only dedicated fundraising body for the hospital. All net income raised is made available to the hospital to fund medical equipment, research, expertise, specialist services, capital projects, scholarships and education. We partner with community groups, individuals, families and corporations to achieve our fundraising goals and strive to make a real difference in child and adolescent healthcare in Western Australia.

This equipment and services are life changing assets that ensure that children receive the most advanced medical care at a time when, due to pain or illness, they feel at their most vulnerable.

Some examples of the varied projects we undertake are as follows:

The fun stuff…..

Stitches Megazone:
The PMH Foundation raised $2.3 million to build the Megazone and, along with The Good Guys, provides annual funding to staff and equip the facility. The Megazone is a play area dedicated to ‘healing through happiness' and provides a space for families to be together, away from the ward. The Megazone has a huge range of activities – including arts & crafts, reading, a collection of arcade games, a 64-seat theatre, fantastic outdoor play area, a sensory room and the Joan Longley Basketball Court.

Wall Murals:
Hospital can be a scary place – the transformation of many of the walls with the hospital to feature giant murals of Finding Nemo and Jungle themes help to make areas within the hospital (such as X-ray rooms and Diagnostics) a more welcoming place and assists staff in being able to undertake procedures more easily.

The serious stuff…..

Recently funded equipment includes:

Burns Unit – Primo Ferro Bath System
It is hard to imagine a more traumatising experience for a child than dealing with a significant burn. This bath system, recently installed in the PMH Burns Unit, allows for patients with burns or other chronic skin conditions to have their dressings removed - through vibration and in water - minimising pain in what would otherwise be an excruciating daily experience.

Cranio-Maxillo Facial Unit - Modelling system
This 3D computer modelling system maps the facial features of children with deformities for example, cleft palate or from accidental injuries) to assist Plastic Surgeons plan and achieve more effective results from surgery resulting in better outcomes for these children.

PMH Expertise:
PMH has earned its standing as one of the world leaders in medical care and research excellence. The PMH Foundation is dedicated to the continuation of this expertise through scholarships, education and staff development.

For example, the PMH Foundation, with the assistance of Woolworths, provided funding for a Palliative Care Nurse (non-oncology) for two years. This position was established to work with families facing their most difficult time and assisted in every area of their child’s medical care, from liaising with GP’s and schools to helping the families access counselling services, aiming to ensure that the child spent a maximum amount of time away from PMH and in their own home to maintain the best quality of life. This position proved so successful that State Government funding has subsequently been approved for its continuation.
